ABOUT Veg MOMOS

Momos, also known as dim sum or dumplings, are popular street food in northern parts of India. However, this adorable looking delicacy is catching up soon and becoming a popular choice for people across India. Each momo is made of 2 parts, the covering and the filling. You can go the traditional way and enjoy steamed momos or you can also go for crispy fried momos. Here’s the recipe for Veg Steam Momos.

INGREDIENTS FOR THE DOUGH (COVERING):

  • 1½ cup maida / plain flour
  • ½ tsp salt
  • water for kneading
  • oil for greasing

INGREDIENTS FOR THE STUFFING:

  • 3 tsp oil
  • 3 cloves garlic (finely chopped)
  • 1 inch ginger (finely chopped)
  • 2 chilies (finely chopped)
  • 4 tbsp spring onion
  • 1 cup carrot (grated)
  • 2 cups cabbage (shredded)
  • ½ tsp pepper (crushed)
  • ½ tsp salt

COOKING INSTRUCTIONS

  1. Firstly, let’s prepare the stuffing. Heat 3 tsp oil in a pan and saute 3 cloves of garlic, 1 inch of ginger and 2 chilies.
  2. Also, add 2 tbsp spring onion whites and saute this on high flame.
  3. Once the garlic starts turning light brown, add 1 cup of finely chopped carrot and 2 cups of cabbage. Stir fry on high flame.
  4. Now add ½ tsp pepper and salt to taste (or ½ tsp salt).
  5. Mix the stuffing properly and then add 2 tbsp spring onion greens to finish it off. Your stuffing mixture is now ready!
  6. Let’s move on to making the momo. Pinch a small ball sized momos dough and flatten it (just like a chapatti).
  7. Now dust it with some maida and start to roll using a rolling pin.
  8. Roll to an almost medium thin circle (around 4-5 inches in diameter). Make sure you roll from the sides and keep the centre slightly thick.
  9. Now place a heaped tbsp of prepared stuffing in the centre.
  10. Start pleating the edges slowly and gather everything.*
  11. Prepare all momos this way and keep them covered under a moist napkin until you are ready to steam them.
  12. Heat a steamer and arrange the momos in the tray without touching each other.
  13. Steam the momos for 10-12 minutes or till shiny sheen starts to appear over it.
  14. And finally, the Veg. Momos recipe is ready to enjoy with delicious momos chutney and mayonnaise.
*DIFFERENT WAYS TO FOLD MOMOS

FIRST METHOD
  1. Apply water with your finger tip or with a small pastry brush towards the circumference (This is an optional step.)
  2. Place a heaped tbsp of vegetable stuffing in the center.
  3. Lift one side of the edge and start making small pleats (or folds).
  4. Do this along the edge of the momo.
  5. Joinand lightly press together all the pleats in the center.

SECOND METHOD

  1. Apply water with your finger tip or with a small pastry brush towards the circumference (This is an optional step.)
  2. Place a heaped tbsp of vegetable stuffing in the center.
  3. Fold the momo in half (semi-circle) and join the edges.
  4. The momo is shaped like gujiya or karanji. You can stop here or can proceed to the next step.
  5. Bring both the ends of the semi-circle together and press lightly to join.

These are the two most basic ways to fold momos. But you can always experiment and try something new. Even with the momo filling, you can explore various types of fillings. For example,
