Upma Recipe An excellent combination of healthy and tasty, upma is the perfect way to kick-start your mornings. It doesn't eat up much of your time but makes a wholesome breakfast. Let’s get into looking at 3 ways to make upma.


ABOUT UPMA

A classic South Indian breakfast recipe, Upma is made with Bombay Rava or Sooji mixed together with assorted spices and herbs. The traditional way to make it is with sooji and fresh herbs, but it can be extended by adding spice mixes and your favorite vegetables to make it more flavourful. From kids to the elderly, Upma is everybody’s favorite.

INGREDIENTS FOR SOOJI UPMA

  1. 2 tbsp oil
  2. ¾ tsp mustard
  3. 1 tsp cumin
  4. 1 tsp urad dal
  5. 1 tsp chana dal
  6. 1 dried red chilli
  7. few curry leaves
  8. ½ onion (finely chopped)
  9. 1-inch ginger (finely chopped)
  10. 2 chilli (finely chopped)
  11. ½ tsp salt
  12. 3 cup water
  13. 1 tsp sugar
  14. 1 cup Rava / semolina (coarse)
  15. 1 tsp ghee
  16. ½ lemon juice
  17. 2 tbsp coriander (finely chopped)

 

COOKING INSTRUCTIONS  FOR SOOJI UPMA

  1. First, let’s take a large kadai and heat 2 tbsp oil. Splutter ¾ tsp mustard, 1 tsp cumin, 1 tsp urad dal, 1 tsp chana dal, 1 dried red chilli and a few curry leaves.
  2. Add ½ onion, 1-inch ginger, 2 chillies and ½ tsp salt.
  3. Saute until the onions soften slightly.
  4. Further, add 3 cups of water and 1 tsp sugar. Get the water to a rolling boil.
  5. Now keep stirring in one hand and simultaneously add 1 cup of rava slowly.
  6. Keep stirring to prevent lumps.
  7. Cover and simmer for 2 minutes or until the rava absorbs all the water.
  8. Add 1 tsp ghee, ½ lemon juice and 2 tbsp coriander and mix well.
  9. You’re all set to enjoy the North Karnataka style uppittu with coconut chutney.

 

INGREDIENTS FOR TOMATO UPMA


  1. 2 tbsp oil
  2. ¾ tsp mustard
  3. 1 tsp cumin
  4. 1 tsp urad dal
  5. 1 tsp chana dal
  6. 1 dried red chilli
  7. few curry leaves
  8. 2 tbsp cashew
  9. ½ onion (finely chopped)
  10. 2 chilli (slit)
  11. 2 tomato (chopped)
  12. 1 carrot (finely chopped)
  13. ½ capsicum (finely chopped)
  14. 5 beans (chopped)
  15. 3 tbsp peas
  16. ½ tsp turmeric
  17. 2 tsp vangi bath masala
  18. 1 tsp salt
  19. 3 cup water
  20. 1 cup Rava / semolina (coarse)
  21. 1 tsp ghee
  22. 2 tbsp coriander (finely chopped)

 

COOKING INSTRUCTIONS  FOR TOMATO UPMA

  6. Now add ½ tsp turmeric, 2 tsp vangi bath masala and 1 tsp salt. Saute on low flame until the spices turn aromatic.
  7. Further, add 3 cup water and get the water to a rolling boil.
  8. Now keep stirring in one hand and simultaneously add 1 cup of rava slowly.
  9. Keep stirring to prevent lumps.
  10. Cover and simmer for 2 minutes or until the rava absorbs all the water.
  11. Add 1 tsp ghee and 2 tbsp coriander and mix well.
  12. You’re all ready to enjoy this new variation of upma with coconut chutney.

  9. ½ onion (finely chopped)
  10. 2 chilli (slit)
  11. 1 carrot (finely chopped)
  12. ½ capsicum (finely chopped)
  13. 5 beans (chopped)
  14. 3 tbsp peas
  15. ½ tsp turmeric
  16. 1 tsp salt
  17. 3 cup water
  18. 1 cup Rava / semolina (coarse)
  19. 1 tsp ghee
  20. ½ tsp lemon juice
  21. 2 tbsp coriander (finely chopped)
